INTENSITY MODULATED RADIATION THERAPY

Advanced form of three dimensional conformal radiation therapy.

Intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) refers to radiotherapy technique on which nonuniform dose distribution across the field is delivered from any given position of the treatment beam.


Advantages:

  1. More conformal than 3DCRT and hence improves precision and accuracy
  2. Sparing normal tissue better than 3DCRT
  3. Dose escalation within treatment volume is possible
  4. Lower rate of complication
  5. Lower cost of patient care following treatment
  6. Larger field and escalation can be integrated in single treatment plan
